The commune of Sainte-Maure de Peyriac is the last site in Lot-et-Garonne that combines the gastronomy of the Armagnac region with the peaceful tranquility of the Landes. It is bordered by the Gélise River to the north and west. Opposite you lies the Gascon countryside with its forests of oak and pine trees and its vineyards. We are also on the Ténarèze road, an ancient Roman road which, according to the saying, allowed travelers to "go from the Pyrenees to Bordeaux without crossing a bridge or taking a boat."
This municipality is made up of the former parishes of Peyriac, Gajo, and Louspeyrous, which belonged to the Duchy of Albret in the Middle Ages. It took the name of a 6th-century saint from Touraine: Sainte Maure.
The 19th-century parish church dedicated to Saint Celse. The old church was located in Peyriac on the road to Saint Pé Saint Simon. It fell into disrepair and was abandoned in 1828. The current church, at the entrance to the village, was built between 1840 and 1846, financed by Joseph Courtade de Salis, owner of the Gajo manor, to atone for his sins. This patron is buried in front of the church, under the stele on the right. The church has been renovated several times: the bell tower was raised (1871), the vault was rebuilt, openings were added and pilasters were installed (1885), the roof structure was repaired and tiles were laid (1937), and restoration work was carried out (1950).
The 13th-century Romanesque chapel of Louspeyrousis dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The parish is mentioned as early as 1286. The chapel was rebuilt in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. It was subsequently altered: a sacristy was added (19th century), the interior was renovated (1852) and restoration work was carried out (1987). Magnificent view of the Gers.
The Louspeyrous manor house, 13th century, directly opposite the chapel (private property).
