The Henri IV Castle Museum
The Château de Nérac, jewel of the city of Albret, is a must-see heritage site in Lot-et-Garonne.
A royal residence
Built in the 15th century by Alain d'Albret, great-great-grandfather of Henri IV, it became a royal residence when the Albret family ascended to the throne of Navarre in 1484.
In the 16th century, the castle was home to three prestigious courts: Marguerite d'Angoulême, sister of François I and patron of the arts, her daughter Jeanne d'Albret, a Calvinist, and, above all, the iconic Henri of Navarre and Queen Margot.
The castle bears witness to the heyday of the d'Albret family during the Renaissance, a veritable royal court where a wide variety of entertainment was enjoyed: walks in the Parc de la Garenne and the king's gardens, hunting in the Landes, and readings with the greatest scholars of the time. During the Revolution, three of the four wings were dismantled and only the north wing was preserved. It features an elegant gallery with twisted columns and sculpted capitals.
The apartments of the Queen of Navarre, located in the north wing, now house a Musée de France.
Collections from the 16th to the 19th century royal estate, the saga of the Albret family, one of the most prestigious families in France, but also the history of the most popular king of the French.
