A fortified medieval village, this English stronghold was a strategic position during the Hundred Years' War. Until 1284, it controlled the lands of what is now the commune of La Bastide de Vianne. A few remains from this period still exist, including the castle (13th century), the ramparts, a fortified gate, and the 13th-century church.
Montgaillard is located at an altitude of 163 meters and has a population of approximately 171.
History: Montgaillarddeveloped around the castle built at the end of the 12th or beginning of the 13th century. It is a parish detached from that of Calézun, whose church was built in a corner of the village as part of the fortifications. At that time, the village had a single gate. This castrum is mentioned in 1259: it was then held by three co-lords, the Astaffords, the Paderns, and the Gontauds, before being acquired by Jourdain de l'Isle in 1275.
At the end of the 13th century, houses and airials occupied the fortified area. An English stronghold belonging to the Duke of Aquitaine, Montgaillard later became a seigneury of the Albret family.
