Montagnac-sur-Auvignon

A little history...

Built around the parish church surrounded by fortifications, the village also features a castle mentioned in 1275, which protects it from the southeast. Some of the town's houses date back to the 16th and early 17th centuries. In the center of the village stands Notre Dame Church, rebuilt in the 17th century. Its imposing bell tower was an observation point with an 18-meter-high spire, which was destroyed by lightning in 1782. A period of prosperity began in Montagnac in the 18th century, so much so that at the beginning of the 19th century, much of the village was rebuilt and modernized. Of particular note is the reconstruction of the western gate in the 18th century.

Discover a magnificent landscape of rolling hills that reveal the richness of the terroir. Vineyards, sunflower fields, and wheat fields offer a rural landscape and a veritable mosaic of colors.

The castle of Saint Loup

The Château de Saint Loup (17th century) was built on medieval ruins and rebuilt in the19thcentury. Fun fact: An ancient sarcophagus can be found at the back of the choir of the church of Saint-Loup. It was revered by the people for its power to cure migraines. In fact, if you put your head through a hole at one end of the sarcophagus, your headache would disappear. The civil authorities wanted to remove the sarcophagus. It was placed on a cart. However, it proved impossible to roll it beyond the town. It was therefore returned to the church.
