Moncaut comes from the word "Mons Calvus," meaning Bald Mountain. Perhaps this is due to the hill, whose open summit offers a panoramic view of the hillsides of Gascony.
Perched on a hillside with a peak elevation of 197 meters, Moncaut offers a wonderful panoramic view of the entire Albret hillside.
Although it has existed since 1064, as mentioned in a Cluny collection, it is estimated that this village developed around the church and castle, which was destroyed in 1853, in the 12th century. Successively owned by several lords, the village expanded over the centuries.
The pottery factory in Moncaut...
Pottery was Moncaut's main industry until the 19th century, contributing to its expansion. The pottery is characterized by manganese blue and characters in the style of the commedia dell'arte.
Its wash houses...
Moncaut now has two wash houses, one in the village of Fonbilan, renovated and maintained by the association Pierre d'hier et d'aujourd'hui (Stone of Yesterday and Today), and the other in Lasdoux. Finally, there are two churches, one in St Pardoux in the village, and the other in Fontarède. The latter and its cemetery are listed as Historic Monuments.
