From medieval town to cork-producing town, Mézin bears witness to a rich past through its narrow streets, the remains of its ramparts, the Church of Saint Jean-Baptiste, listed as a historic monument, and the Cork and Stopper Museum, which has been awarded the "Musée de France" label.
Mézin first developed at the end of the 11th century, around the current church, a former Benedictine priory. Thanks to trade, Mézin grew rich and prospered. The town's notables built stone houses with arcades, which now line Place Fallières.
Mézin was then reborn in the 19th century thanks to a local gold mine: cork, harvested from the oak forests. The Cork and Stopper Museum traces the history of this industry, which made the village the capital of cork stoppers during the presidency of Armand Fallières (from 1906 to 1913), a native of Mézin.
