Formerly known as Caliniacum, this village was a staging post on a Roman road. Column shafts and capitals attest to a Roman presence in the commune. The feudal castle located in the center of the village now consists only of the remains of the surrounding walls, the old gate, and the well. It was built in the 13th century.
Calignac and its châteaux
Calignac also has five private châteaux that bear witness to the rich heritage and history of the town.
The Château de Lassalle features a main building, a stone staircase, and an inner courtyard that could accommodate carriages during the reign of Henry IV.
Carderan Castle, built in the 19th century, with a nearby 17th-century dovecote on pillars topped with a bell tower.
The Château de Caubéos, with its square corner tower, inner courtyard, and circular dovecote.
The Château de Mons (17th century), built on Gallo-Roman ruins, has a square courtyard and two corner towers. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Montagnac sur Auvignon.
And finally, the castle of Barbe or Barthes.
The parish church of Saint Etienne was built on the site of the original chapel. It features a square bell tower, beautiful stained glass windows, and a mission cross dating back at least 400 years.
Based on intensive agricultural activity, the village nevertheless tends to look toward the large cities that surround it (Nérac, Agen).
