Buzet-sur-Baïse

Buzet wine, classified as AOC, is known worldwide, but that is not the only charm of this village. Its port is a relatively important crossroads between the Canal, Baise, Garonne, and Lot rivers. The history of Buzet-sur-Baïse began in prehistoric times and grew during antiquity and the Middle Ages.

Buzet-sur-Baïse stretches across the wide plain where the Baïse meets the Garonne. This municipality has around 1,236 inhabitants and its highest point is 143 meters above sea level. Its strategic location between Albret and Gascony facilitated trade, particularly in wine. Vine cultivation has been present on the terraces of Buzet for over 2,000 years, a source of pride and millennial know-how. In a sip of Buzet, you will find the thousand flavors of the Albret terroir.

History: Inthe first quarter of the 19th century, economic changes led to the abandonment of the old castle town on the spur of the 15th-century castle in favor of housing in the plain, close to the Baïse River and the Damazan-Nérac road. In 1832, the administrative center of Buzet was transferred to a place called "Lagravère," where plans were made to build a public square and a town hall. The town hall was built in the second quarter of the 19th century, halfway between the Baïse River and the road from Damazan to Nérac. Around 1850, the church of Buzet-le-Haut was closed to the public. Several locations were proposed, which give a better understanding of the village's development: the first, in the center of the village, was abandoned in favor of a larger site to the west of the village along the road to Xaintrailles. The 19th-century Gothic-style church was built by Verdier, the architect of the Petit Nérac church and the monumental staircase.

The port of Buzet, gateway to river tourism in Albret: The new village already had a slipway on the Baïse, which was renovated in 1878. Today, the town's port is an important point for river navigation. A double lock allows passage from the Garonne side canal to the Baïse. The side canal, which is 193 kilometers long, has 53 locks and several canal bridges. Thanks to its location at the crossroads between the Baïse, the Lot, the side canal, and the Garonne, the port of Buzet offers many opportunities to discover Albret and Lot-et-Garonne.

Buzet wine: Ideally located in the heart of the "Côtes du Buzet," the town of Buzet gave its name to the wine produced in the north of the Pays d'Albret. A renowned wine, Buzet has been classified as an AOC since 1973. The grape varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Alongside several independent winegrowers, production is organized around the "Vignerons de Buzet" winery, founded in 1955. It has 4,000 barrels made on site by two artisan coopers. Calling all lovers of good wine...
