Bruch

Bruch, the medieval Castrum of Albret

A welcoming region par excellence, the Southwest has forged a unique identity by bringing together its diverse heritage. Bruchoise traditions are rooted in Gascon culture and the Albret way of life, combining the authentic and delicious gastronomic heritage of Gascony with the elegant and refined heritage of the Val d'Albret.

The two magnificent towers that dominate the village and the remains of the walls that are still visible bear witness to the region's turbulent past during the feudal era.

The origins of the village remain unclear, but the settlement dates back at least to the Merovingian period (5th century).

The village developed throughout the Middle Ages, passing from hand to hand, from French lords to English lords, and living through the episodes of French history, such as the Wars of Religion... Step back in time during an unusual walk through the narrow streets of the medieval village. From street to street, you will be charmed by the peaceful and calm atmosphere that reigns over the village.

Saint Amans Church:Construction of this Gothic church spanned from the 16th to the 19th century.

"Legend has it that during the revolution of 1789, one of the church bells was taken down and thrown into the Auvignon, where it is said to still be... It is even claimed that it can be heard ringing on stormy nights..."

Remains of the fortified walls:Bruch, a former fortified town, has preserved some remains of the walls that once protected the village.

Dominating the Auvignon valley, the South Toweris a typical defensive structure and a major element of the former 13th-century walled enclosure. A symbol of the power and might of the nobility, the tower unfortunately fell victim to revolutionary fervor, which razed the second level. Today, the clock's gentle chimes mark the rhythm of village life. The medieval village: Strolling through the village along the narrow streets, you will see many half-timbered houses with corbels typical of the Middle Ages. The square has been recently redesigned and now houses the market hall, where you can dream of the days of knights in the shade.

Dating back to the 13th century, the North Toweris one of the two ancient entrances to the village and will surprise you with its unusual architecture. It combines the architectural style typical of defensive structures with the refinement and elegance of medieval seigneurial buildings. Having withstood the ravages of history and time, it is now the emblem of the village, symbolizing the desire to bring the past and present together.

From the Town Hall Garden, you will have a magnificent view of the Garonne plain.

The Saint Amans Fountain:"Oral tradition has it that in the 5th century, Saint Amans, then bishop of Bordeaux, traveled to the Roman villa of Bapteste near Moncrabeau along the Roman road. Passing through the Bruchoises lands, he stopped there and his prayers caused an inexhaustible spring to gush forth. He used this water to baptize the first Christians in the area. Later, the spring water was believed to have the power to cure eye diseases."

La Carrère Saint Amans is a section of the Roman road that linked Bordeaux to Narbonne along the Garonne River. The Romans called it "La Via Aquitania" (the road to Aquitaine). In the 12th century, the people of Bruchois built the fountain that protects the spring.
